Meet the Teacher
I’m a 3D Modelling Artist and Educator.
I was a Graphic Designer and a Digital Animation/Games Design Lecturer at a university before I started my career in VFX and Animation.
I’ve been working on Feature films and TV shows since 2013, switching roles from Matchmove & Layout to Modeling as a Props and Environment Artist.
With all the skills I’ve learnt over the years, I’ve had the joy of helping aspiring artists across the globe improve their models towards an industry standard.
I’m here to help you progress from stand-alone tutorials on ‘how to make XYZ in Maya’, overcome technical issues and learn how to create high-quality assets independently.
What’s a Asset, Prop and Environment Artist?
This is a 3D artist who is part of creating any CGI object for a project or show that isn’t a character.
Examples of this can be (but not limited to):
Vehicles
Vegetation
Grey Boxing
Set Assembly
Set props
Hero assets
Architecture
Buildings
Tasks can vary daily and can adjust depending on the show’s progress. Most of the time, you will be assigned assets to work on from start to finish. This generally involves a blocking stage, a detail pass, and a quality check before it’s sent down the pipe to the next artist in the production line!
Example of an asset from start to finish
This is a still image of the asset from a turntable render, showing how it looks & behaves in a lighted environment.
Along with making assets from start to finish, it’s common to have periods of a show/project where you’re only focused on a single part of the process across multiple assets. For example, re-organising UV shells, correcting tech fixes such as removing N-gons or face normals, or populating a set with a particular prop with over 500 instances.
…That last one may or may not be based on a true story…
